Using a portable forge, blacksmith Bob Montgomery will demonstrate traditional elements of blacksmithing, then directly engage participants in metal work using a hammer and anvil.

Using techniques of heating, hammering, and bending, participants will create an iron hook of their own. Recommended for ages 8 and up, though Bob has worked with children in preschool.

This program will be held on Thursday, July 10th at the Pike County Public Library (Lee Avenue). Patrons may attend either a Morning Session (10:00-12:00) or an Afternoon Session (1:00-3:00). The program will take place under a tent in the field behind the library.

Bob Montgomery has been a blacksmith and farrier for 40 years. He uses the traditional metalworking techniques of heating, bending and drawing out to build sculptures and functional pieces. As a member of ABANA and the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, he participates in exhibitions and his work is displayed throughout the region as public art and in private collections. Since the early 1990s he has been sharing his art and love of blacksmithing with students throughout the state.

If you are registering a family, please indicate the number of participants in your group by clicking "Add Registrant" and entering names.

Registration Policy: Registration secures your place in the program, and spaces often fill quickly. If you are registered but unable to attend, please let us know so that another patron may take your place.

The library will hold reserved seats for 10 minutes after the program begins. After this grace period, any unclaimed places may be offered to patrons on standby.
